Iwama Aikido is the style of Aikido as taught originally by Morihei Ueshiba (referred to as O-Sensei or ‘Great Teacher’), the founder of this martial art. Iwama Aikido preserves the founder’s style through the lineage of his student Morihiro Saito, 9th Dan Shihan and beyond.

The Iwama style Aikido is based upon solid foundations of understanding, developing greater skills and ability through regular practice in both body (Tai-jutsu) and Aiki weapons (Buki-waza). Saito Sensei was keen to promote this approach to teaching the art, as he had been taught by O-Sensei and to emphasise the clear relationship between body and weapon forms.

Takemusu Iwama Aikido is an organisation founded by Sensei Tony Sargeant who has trained in Aikido for since 1973 and followed the teachings of Saito Shihan and attended his seminars all over the world. Additionally Sensei Sargeant trained at the Iwama dojo, the birthplace of modern Aikido, where he was awarded his 5th Dan in 1994.

Although this is the TIA website, it’s goal is to further ‘all’ Iwama style Aikido teachers, their Dojos and Clubs. So many have followed Saito Sensei, attending his seminars and even travelling to Iwama to train under him in order to expand their knowledge of O-Sensei’s original martial art. He has built an Iwama Aikido legacy that must continue to be shared around the globe.

As this website develops it is our sincere wish that anyone interested in finding an Iwama style Aikido club or dojo, throughout Europe, can find listings here, either as a TIA club or separate organisation. Additionally, useful resources and links to information on the Iwama style of Aikido, sometimes referred to as ‘Traditional’ Aikido, will be posted here as an open and shared repository for all those wishing to further their knowledge and training in this wonderful art.

Welcome!
